Liverpool are on the verge of recruiting two new defenders in the shape of PSG’s Mamadou Sakho and Sporting Lisbon centre-back Tiago Ilori.
Sakho can play in the centre or at left-back and is likely to cover for the injured Aly Cissokho – out for at least six weeks with an ankle problem – while Ilori is seen as replacement for Sebastian Coates who is expected to miss the whole campaign.
Brendan Rodgers prioritised defenders on his transfer wish-list due to the injury problems suffered in that department and should have his targets in place within 48 hours.
French international Sakho, 23, will cost £13 million; Ilori around the £8 million mark. Both are young, hungry players and very highly-rated on the continent. Interestingly, 20-year-old Ilori was born in London and would be eligible to play for England, despite having featured for Portugal up to under-20 level.

Real Madrid claim they will sign 24-year-old Gareth Bale for £78 million, leaving the £80 miillion the Spanish club paid for Cristiano Ronaldo, 28, as the world record fee for a player.
Manchester United will make an improved bid for Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera, 24, after a £21 million offer was rejected by the Spanish club.
United will trigger the release clause in Herrera’s contract with a £30.7 million bid, while also offering Roma £10.2 million for midfielder Daniele De Rossi, 30.
The Old Trafford club consulted former England manager Fabio Capello about the abilities of De Rossi, although their offer for the Italy international has been turned down by the Serie A side.
Everton have remained silent about Manchester United’s improved offer of £36 million for defender Leighton Baines,… Continue reading →
Tottenham Hotspurs have completed a fantastic day in the transfer market by announcing the signing of Christian Eriksen from Ajax.
Eriksen becomes the third major signing of the day at White Hart Lane after the arrivals of Vlad Chichires and Erik Lamela from Steaua Bucharest and Roma respectively. Spurs have paid £11 million for their latest acquisition which has made them England’s top spenders this summer. The three latest recruits are added to a new look Spurs with Paulinho, Roberto Soldado, Etienne Capoue and Nacer Chadli, who all joined earlier in the summer for a combined fee of around £60 million.
The club made the announcement on Twitter saying;
“We are delighted to announce that we have reached agreement with Ajax for the transfer of Christian Eriksen. The Denmark international moved to Ajax in 2008 & has since gone on to play a total of 161 games… Continue reading →
Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signings of Erik Lamela from Roma and Vlad Chiriches from Steaua Bucharest.
The North London outfit have continued their summer spending spree and have once again broken their own transfer record. Argentina international Lamela has cost close to £30 million while Romania international Chiriches fetched a comparatively measly £8.5 million. The two deals have taken Spurs’ spending to a whopping £89 million, a fee that expected to be covered by the sale of Gareth Bale.
The protracted Bale move had previously worried the White Hart Lane faithful and not only because they would be losing their best player. Many of these fans we dubious of the way their talisman would be replaced. I think most fans will be impressed by the overhaul that has taken place.
Erik Lamela, 21, comes highly rated after scoring 15 goals from the wing last season… Continue reading →
Spurs look set to offload outcast Emmanuel Adebayor on loan within days, as Bundesliga club Schalke wait in the wings to sign him on a season-long loan.
Now 29, the Togo international began strongly when on a similar temporary arrangement at White Hart Lane, but saw his form plummet alarmingly since completing the switch from Manchester City permanently.
After making an impressive mark in the Premier League with Arsenal, the powerful forward has struggled to find a settled home for his goalscoring talents, leading him on a journey that encompassed a spell with Real Madrid along the way.
Schalke are in the market for a new striker having agreed a fee with Celtic for Teemu Pukki and would count Adebayor as a major boost in their hopes to qualify from a tricky Champions League group containing Chelsea, Basel and Steaua Bucharest.
With Roberto Soldado viewed as the main striker at… Continue reading →
