Having impressed at U’17 level with 8 goals in 9 games, and at U’20 level with 10 from 13, Arsenals 21 year old forward Joel Campbell was quick to rise up to the rank of a full international. Campbell’s senior debut came in the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup, in which he scored in Costa Rica’s 5-0 victory against Cuba. With a further 7 goals coming in 29 more caps for Las Ticos, it seems England have someone to worry about from Group D’s alleged minnows!

Benfica kept their balance in Madeira and beat Nacional (0-1) for the second time this season

The year is almost over but the League Cup is only starting for some of the Portuguese top teams. Yesterday, Benfica made their first appearance in a competition they have won for four times over the last five seasons and Nacional ended up beaten once again by the Lisbon side.

The match was balanced, with Benfica displaying more determination during the first half and being rewarded with an own goal by Nacional’s defender Edson Mexer. Nicolás Gaitán worked a curling cross from the right and Mexer deflected the ball into his own net when attempting to head it clear of danger.

The second half revealed a more daring Nacional team, eager to find the way to Jan Oblak’s net but Benfica’s keeper kept his side ahead with a remarkable save with half an hour… Continue reading →

Sunderland announce Alonso signing

Sunderland have announced their first signing of the transfer window, with Marcos Alonso joining from Fiorentina on loan for the rest of the season.

Alonso has found first team appearances hard to come by this season, making only three league appearances. He becomes Gus Poyet’s first signing at the Stadium of Light and was said to be excited to join the club.

League Cup: Sporting and FC Porto cancel each other out

Cédric Soares (Sporting) attemps a bicycle kick under Silvestre Varela’s observation

With the Portuguese League on hold until mid-January, the League Cup became the center of football fans’ attention during the weekend. And for a good reason, too: Sporting Lisbon and FC Porto met last night at Alvalade, in Lisbon, and the current form of both teams was raising all expectations for the match.

The outcome, though, was not as glamorous as most guesses predicted. Despite being a competitive match, with good chances for both sides, the goalless draw persisted and Lions and Dragons shared the spoils. The result was the same as in the opening game of the group, between Marítimo and Penafiel, which took place Sunday afternoon.

In group C, trophy holders Braga secured an important win by 2-1 at Estoril and will now wait at the top of the table for the clash between Belenenses and… Continue reading →
