Arsenal are hoping to complete a deal for Borussia Dortmund’s Greece defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos, 26, but don’t want to pay a £20 million fee.

Real Madrid have completed a £20 million deal to sign forward Radamel Falcao, 28, from Monaco.

Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert has made an £8 million bid to sign Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley, 25.

Champions League group stage draw

Today saw the group stage of this seasons Champions League drawn. Liverpool have replaced mainstays Manchester United, joining Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City as England’s representatives.

 

Five time winners Liverpool will be confident of qualification from their group. However, they will have to tackle the tournament holders, Real Madrid, on the way. Chelsea will be even more confident though. While no Champions League games are easy, they have some…well…easy games. Despite the difficulty Celtic had, The Blues shouldn’t struggle against Maribor. They have potentially tough trips to Germany and Portugal though, they will still be expected to top their group.

 

Arsenal’s progression will be more of a challenge. Borussia Dortmund await the Gunners, as well as a tough trip to Turkey to face Galatasaray. Capital One Cup 3rd Round draw

The top six Premier League teams joined the mix in the Capital One Cup 3rd round. Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur were all given home ties, with Everton the only top side starting their campaign away from home.

 

Burton Albion were rewarded for knocking out Queens Park Rangers with a home tie against Brighton and Hove Albion. While Milton Keynes Dons host Bradford City after putting four past Louis van Gaal’s Manchester United.

 

There are five all Premier League ties, the best of which see Southampton travel to Arsenal and Everton visiting Swansea City.

All ties will be played during the week beginning 22nd September.
