Long-serving Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi may forced to leave his boyhood club in order to gain more playing time.
Chances look slim for Ameobi at St. James’ Park, with the signing of Loic Remy already wrapped up and talks ongoing to seal a deal for Lyon powerhouse Bafetimbi Gomis.
The 31-year-old has played for the Magpies his whole career, bar a short loan stint with Stoke City in 2008.
A fans’ favourite, Ameobi carved out an international career with Nigeria after missing out on full honours with England. In a World Cup year, the tall forward will be desperate to feature regularly at club level and realises opportunities will be limited in the north-east.
There’ll be no shortage of suitors from the Championship for his services, plus a couple of Premier Leagues sides. It’ll certainly be a wrench to leave the club he’s dedicated his life to, but with one year remaining on his contract it seems the correct time to look elsewhere.
