Arsenal will begin a battle with Zenit St Petersburg for Benfica star, Rodrigo, who has been put up for sale by the Portuguese club as an attempt to raise funds. Any potential transfer fee is said to be in the region of £25 million or above as Rodrigo has a prestigious past, having come through the Real Madrid youth system, and is looking more and more like a world class striker with every passing game.
It was revealed, earlier in the window, that Rodrigo was set to sign for Zenit but the striker himself stalled the move to Russia. As a result, Arsene Wenger has spotted an opening and has taken full advantage as the 22 year old is now considering a move to the Gunners.
However, the only potential stumbling block in this deal is the fact that Arsenal want him on loan with a view to buy but Benfica want straight up cash in January. But they did realise that Rodrigo’s fee may increase if he has a successful spell in England.
Wenger has openly admitted that he’s on the lookout for a striker which has sent almost every tabloid in England crazy linking the North London club with every striker currently playing in Europe. But it does appear as though the Arsenal boss has let some players slip through his fingers. For example, Alvaro Morata, Dimitar Berbatov and most recently, Mirko Vucinic, have all been heavily linked with the club.
With under two weeks to go, Wenger is getting desperate and that may play into the hands of Benfica who don’t have to sell the player. The player with five goals in 11 games this season is hot property at the moment.
He will offer a different threat to that of Olivier Giroud and Nicklas Bendtner because they are players who would rather hold the ball up rather than play off the shoulder of the defender. In theory, this will suit Mesut Ozil’s style of play better because he likes to play balls in behind the defence for attackers to run on to.
It will be a very good signing for Wenger, should he land his man, as he will offer an interesting alternative.
