As Arsenal look to add a defensive midfielder to their already well stocked midfield, former Arsenal midfielder Alex Song is the new name being linked with the Emirates Stadium on a season long loan deal from Barcelona.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has been linked with completing a season long loan deal for the Cameroon international to bring him back to North London to add some much needed defensive options to an already attacking midfield. New Barcelona boss Luis Enrique is willing to loan the midfielder out for no fee with the Premier League looking his mostly likely destination. Barcelona have added former Sevilla man Ivan Rakitic this summer and along with Sergio Busquets in that role, it has meant Song is now surplus to requirements. If Song was to return to the Emirates stadium, he would provide competition with club captain Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini as the Gunners main defensive midfielder and add some much needed bite to an already star studded midfield.
Song, who made 138 appearances for the club during 6 years in North London, will allow the Gunners creative players such as Aaron Ramsey, Mesut Ozil and Jack Wilshere to go forward whilst ensuring the defence is not left susceptible to counter attacks. Song has been linked with a host of Premier League clubs this summer including Tottenham, Everton and Manchester United however it is thought he would favour a return to Arsenal should the opportunity arise.
Arsenal have been linked with the likes of Real Madrid’s Sami Khedira and Sporting Lisbon’s William Carvalho throughout the transfer window, however Song would be a cheaper alternative which may be more appealing to Wenger considering he has already spent £66 million this summer and is also on the lookout for another central defender since the departure of Belgian defender Thomas Vermaelen to the Camp Nou.
