After Wigan Athletic’s stunning victory at the City of Manchester Stadium Arsenal are overwhelming favourites to end their trophy drought and win the FA Cup.
After the semi-final draw was made by Arsenal legend Ian Wright and his son Shaun many were salivating over the possibility of a Wembley tie between Manchester City and the Gunners. Wigan’s shock victory, however, has left the north London side a comparatively clear view of silverware.
Despite this win Wigan find themselves third favourites at 8/1 to win the competition due to the impending tie against Arsenal. Hull City find themselves as second favourites at 4/1 while their opponents, Sheffield United, are the long shots at 14/1. Arsene Wenger’s men have been given odds of 4/9 by SkyBet to win their first piece of silverware since the 2005 FA Cup triumph.
Many fans are wondering if Wenger’s side will once again fall at the last hurdle though. With the Premier League title still in sight they fell to a dismal defeat to Stoke City last week. At the same time, title favourites Chelsea were recording a 3-1 win away to local rivals Fulham. They added another three points during Arsenal’s FA Cup exploits this weekend too, with a 4-0 hammering of Tottenham Hotspur. This leaves Arsenal seven points off the top spot they occupied only a few weeks ago, leading many to wonder if the dream is still alive. They also look all but out of the Champions League, having to turn over Bayern Munich in Germany to progress.
This leaves the FA Cup as their only hope of silverware. Surely as the only team left from the top ten teams in the country this one is in the bag though, right?
