Zenit Snap Up Villas-Boas

Russian Premier League side Zenit St. Petersburg have appointed former Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas on a two-year contract, according to the club.

Still only 36 years of age, Villas-Boas has suffered two spectacular setbacks in English football after a hugely successful period in charge of FC Porto.

He brought home the UEFA Europa League and Portuguese title in his one and only campaign at the Porto helm, prior to a move back to Chelsea where he’d previously spent time as part of Jose Mourinho’s back-room staff.

However, it all went wrong at Stamford Bridge, with high-profile clashes of personality between the young head coach and senior players causing an uneasy tension in the dressing room and some unusual results on the pitch. A round of 16, 1st leg Champions’ League defeat away to Napoli was the final straw and he paid the ultimate price for his team’s… Continue reading →

Beckham On Miami Mission

Retired football superstar David Beckham is set to introduce a new franchise to MLS as the league aims to eventually increase the number of clubs to 24 by 2020.

Former England captain Beckham negotiated a clause in his lucrative LA Galaxy contract when signing for the Californian side in 2007, allowing him to purchase the rights to a Major League franchise at a knockdown rate of $25m (£15.6m).

It’s believed the 38-year-old has been considering several locations for his latest venture, but it’s thought the Sunshine State of Florida holds most appeal.

MLS currently has 19 participating clubs, with a 20th born from an alliance between Manchester City and New York Yankees baseball due to officially begin in 2015. That franchise is to be known by the moniker New York City FC, meaning there’ll be two teams vying for supremacy in the Big Apple.

Meanwhile, previous attempts to promote interest… Continue reading →

Zaha In Line For Loan Move

Manchester United may be willing to loan out winger Wilfried Zaha if he fails to make a successful breakthrough into the United first-team before January.

The 20-year-old forged a fine reputation in the Championship for former club Crystal Palace during 142 appearances for the Eagles, even forcing his way into the England reckoning when winning two caps.

However, the Ivory Coast-born star hasn’t featured in the Premier League this season since completing a dream move to Old Trafford, largely due to stiff competition for places on the flanks and it seems highly unlikely he will do so regularly in the near future.

Zaha has been linked with a temporary return to south-east London and Selhurst Park during recent weeks, but it’s expected a plethora of suitors would be interested in his services should David Moyes make the whizz-kid available for loan this winter.

Though Moyes admits to being a huge… Continue reading →

Flamini Ruled Out Of Crunch Clashes

Key Arsenal midfield man Mathieu Flamini is set for a potential three-week lay-off through a groin injury picked up in the win over Crystal Palace last weekend.

The problem could see him miss the upcoming fixtures against Chelsea and Liverpool this week, as well as crucial games with Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League and Manchester United four days later.

Flamini has been instrumental in Arsenal’s fine start to their campaign after returning to the club he served with great distinction for four years before heading off to Serie A and Milan in 2008. The loss of the Frenchman’s services will be keenly felt by a side which hasn’t suffered the pain of defeat when Flamini has featured.

It’s a vital period for the Gunners in their dual pursuit of Champions League and Premier League, with ties against trophy rivals coming thick and fast during the weeks ahead.

Manager Arsene… Continue reading →

Guardiola U-Turn on Lewandowski?

Poland striker Robert Lewandowski could be set for a sensational switch to the English Premier League following reports of a change of heart from Bayern head coach Josep Guardiola over his potential signing.

It had been viewed as a certainty that Bayern Munich would enter into a pre-contract agreement with the Borussia Dortmund star come January, with the Pole’s current deal due to expire next summer.

However, in a remarkable turn of events, rumours abound from Germany that Guardiola no longer feels convinced of the need to recruit the 25-year-old and has urged club bosses to step back from their interest in the player with immediate effect.

Lewandowski featured for his country at Wembley last night, as England earned a crucial 2-0 victory despite Poland’s threat on the break which almost led to a couple of goals for the Dortmund man.

The likes of Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea… Continue reading →
