The surprise packages of the World Cup so far

With the World Cup well and truly up and running, there are a number of teams that have really impressed against the odds so far. Whether you’re amazed by the French flair or the Dutch dominance, it is important to consider some teams that could be the surprise package in Brazil.

Journey so far:

The South American side were up against tough opponents in group B with the Netherlands and Spain favourites to go through. Although Chile were underdogs in their group before the start of the tournament, many had backed them to perform in Brazil and they have not been disappointed. A victory against Australia was an absolute must for Jorge Sampaoli’s men and they delivered with a convincing 3-1 victory. This gave them the opportunity to really stake a claim for the last 16 as they faced a disheartened Spanish side that were… Continue reading →

Chelsea move for Fabregas reveals Arsenal’s transfer policy

Cesc Fabregas has recently completed a move to Chelsea in a deal rumoured to be in the region of £30 million. Despite the Spaniard joining one of the biggest teams in England, a very large part of him would have wanted Arsene Wenger to come calling, opening the door for the imminent return of the prodigal son. Unfortunately for Arsenal fans and Fabregas himself, the North London club turned down the option to sign him before the former Barcelona midfielder was offered to Chelsea. Although the new Chelsea signing has upset many Arsenal fans, it reveals a lot about Wenger’s transfer plans for the summer.

Before Fabregas became available, many Arsenal fans would not have been crying out for the acquisition of a creative midfielder in the summer transfer market. La Liga looms for Lukaku

Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku could be set to a move to Spain with both Atletico Madrid and Valencia CF interested in the 21-year old.

Chelsea’s imminent capture of Spanish international Diego Costa has put the future of the Belgian international into question and it is rumoured that a loan switch to Madrid could be part of the deal. Despite this, Valencia also hold a strong interest in signing Lukaku with a suspected fee of £18 million set to be offered to the West London club. The Belgian could become part of a massive summer spending spree as Valencia are ready to splash out €60 million on new players. This news comes after Peter Lim, a Singapore businessman, took over the debt-ridden Spanish club in May.

For Chelsea, the more attractive proposition lies with Atletico Madrid, where goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has thrived whilst being on loan at the La Liga champions… Continue reading →

West Ham increase Kouyate offer

Senegalese international defender Cheikhou Kouyate is the subject of a new £8.5 million bid from West Ham United this morning, according to reports.

The defender has been the subject of tremendous interest from across Europe, with Valencia CF previously tabling a bid within the region of £7.5 million for the RSC Anderlecht star. However, it now seems that West Ham have bettered the offer tabled by the La Liga side, putting the East London club in the driving seat for the 6’4 defender.

Kouyate has been a star performer for Anderlecht this year, making six Champions League starts for the Belgian side. The centre-back, who can also operate in midfield, is desperate to play in the Premier League next season;
