Barcelona have made an official bid for Chelsea defender David Luiz, according to Sky Sports.
The Catalan giants have been linked with a move for the Brazil international for most of the summer but until now there have been no bids. Despite the interest Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has insisted Luiz is not for sale. He was full of praise for the enigmatic defender after The Blues defeated AC Milan 2-0 in a preseason friendly.
“David has come back with us fantastically and we have to use his quality,” Mourinho told reporters.
“He has big self-confidence and self-esteem, especially when he comes up from the back with the ball,” he added.
The 26-year-old really impressed in the second half of last season and was a key player in the heart of Brazil’s defence in this summer’s successful Confederation Cup. His strength in the back line is evident but he is also more than capable of filling a midfield spot.
The bid is said to be worth around £35 million but all indications suggest Luiz will still be at Stamford Bridge next season, despite whispers that he would welcome a move to Barca.
