The French manager often receives criticism for his quiet transfer windows. But with the Premier League the strongest it’s ever been, as well as the richest, he knows he needs to spend to compete. Long gone are the days of the ‘big four’, now we have six teams that ‘expect’ to finish in the top four. This means competition is hot and the pressure is high.
Arsenal finished fourth last season and despite leading the way for months many believe they only finished as high as they did because of the inconsistency below them. The Blues have completed big money moves for Cesc Fabregas, Diego Costa and Filipe Luis already during the transfer window and Mourinho is now happy with the squad that will start the season. Fabregas joined from Barcelona for a fee of around £30 million. While Costa and Luis, both from Atletico Madrid, signed for a combined fee of £48 million.
The Portuguese manager is now confident he has a side that will compete for the Premier League title. He admits, however, that it’s impossible to predict who will run out eventual champions. Because of heavy investment from the other top sides it’s harder to call than ever before.
