Celtic manager Neil Lennon moved a step closer to off-setting the recent loss of Gary Hooper up-front with the agreement of a fee for Schalke’s Finnish forward Teemu Pukki today.
The 23-year-old has been a target for the Glasgow giants ever since Hooper defected to English Premier League side Norwich City earlier in the transfer window and it appears Celtic are now on the verge of sealing the deal for his long-term replacement.
Pukki enjoyed spells with Sevilla and HJK Helsinki before a move to the Bundesliga in 2011. However, the Finland international has played a largely peripheral role in Germany and will jump at the chance to feature regularly at Celtic Park.
Lennon’s side secured their spot in the Champions League proper this week with a second-leg comeback victory over Shakhtar Karagandy and will need several reinforcements to make a good fist of it on the European stage, as they did last season in reaching the last-16 stage.
