Welbeck desperate for central role

Arsenal and England striker Danny Welbeck wants to play as a central striker in the near future, insisting he has what it takes to be a prolific goalscorer.

 

Welbeck joined Arsenal on transfer deadline day from Manchester United after it became apparent that Radamel Falcao was moving to Old Trafford. He has a goal scoring record of just 29 in 142 games but this is the record of a player that has spent most of his time on the wing, with Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney taking up the central striker roles. He has joined the Gunners in the hope of becoming a striker, signed in part due to the injury of Olivier Giroud.

Tottenham sign international defender, striker now needed?

Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of DeAndre Yedlin from Seattle Sounders for an undisclosed fee.

 

The 21-year-old becomes manager Mauricio Pochettino’s 4th signing of the summer, having already signed two defenders and a goalkeeper. Yedlin has signed a four-year contract and will remain at the MLS club until the start of next season. Former-Spurs goalkeeper Kasey Keller urged the USA international to stay in Seattle to ensure regular football. But the immediate loan-back should solve the problem, allowing Yedlin to develop further before moving to the Premier League.

 

Yedlin, who has played seven times for his country – including three substitute appearances in the World Cup – has spoken of his happiness about the move.

“I’m very excited to come to the Premier League and challenge myself against some of the best players in the world,” he said.

Xavi Hernandez retires from International Football

Barcelona veteran Xavi Hernandez has officially announced his retirement from international football.

Xavi made his international debut in the year 2000 and was capped 133 times for his country. The experience Spaniard was part of the Spanish side who won back to back European championships in 2008 and 2012, whilst also adding a World Cup medal to his trophy cabinet in 2010.

The influential midfielder named player of the tournament at Euro 2008 feels that now is the right time to retire from international football given his frustrations at Barcelona’s poor form last season and the Fifa World Cup, “I was disappointed on two levels at the end of last season as I did not feel useful to Barca or to the national team”.

Germany vs Argentina: 2014 Fifa World Cup Final Match Preview

DAY 32 of the 2014 Fifa World Cup sees the curtain fall down on what is arguably the best finals tournament of all time. Germany and Argentina will face off in the Maracana, Rio de Janeiro, where one of them will become champions and win the most prestigious prize football has to offer.

It is expected to be pulsating clash with both teams looking to win their first crown in over 20 years. Indeed the last time they both got their hands on the trophy they beat each other. A Maradona-inspired Argentina defeated the Germans 3-2 in Mexico 86 and a Lothar Matthaus-led Germany beat Argentina 1-0 in Italia 90.

Both sides went into this tournament with high hopes and boasted a fierce attacking outlook however for Argentina that hasn’t been the base for their success.
