Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is readying the Anfield nest for a new arrival in the shape of Brazilian striker Diego Costa from Atletico Madrid.
It’s believed the £21m release clause in the player’s contract has been met, which should lead to talks with his representatives in the coming days.
This surprise move puts the spotlight firmly on the future of want-away forward Luis Suarez. It looks highly likely the potential signing of Diego Costa represents a direct replacement for Suarez, as opposed to a possible partnership between the two.
Arsenal would dearly love to snap up Suarez and should the deal for the 24-year-old Brazil international come to fruition, they might just get their wish.
Diego Simeone is loathe to release Costa, but his hand will be forced if indeed the release fee was reached by the Liverpool offer. All that remains is for the player to express a desire to leave and the Atletico boss is left without a say on the matter.
The former Rayo Vallecano man bagged 10 La Liga goals last season, but will be expected to contribute even more in the Premier League, especially if he’s joining to take over from Suarez.
An amount of £21m seems a heck of a lot to spend on a striker who frankly isn’t prolific in front of goal, but Rodgers evidently sees something in him that he can develop.
Now, the ball sits squarely in Costa’s court.
