After Manchester United’s horror show in their 4-0 Capital Cup defeat to Milton Keynes Dons, last night, the latest name of the rumour mill is linking the Old Trafford club with a surprise swoop for Wales’s midfielder Joe Allen from arch rivals Liverpool.
The former Swansea midfielder has seen his chances limited at Anfield and despite starting Monday’s 3-1 defeat to Manchester City, is not a regular starter under Boss Brendan Rodgers and may be interested in the move. Boss Louis Van Gaal, who completed the £59.7 million deal for Real Madrid star Angel Di Maria yesterday, wants to add another central midfielder to his ranks with Michael Carrick still injured, and Ander Herrera picking up an injury during the opening day defeat to Swansea, it has left Darren Fletcher as the only fit central midfielder in the squad with Anderson expected to be offloaded before the end of the window.
Should Allen make the move a surprise move to Old Trafford, he would become Van Gaal’s 5th summer signing after the additions of Luke Shaw, Herrera, Di Maria and Marcos Rojo. After the addition of Emre Can to the Liverpool squad, Rodgers may be willing to let Allen leave and he would be expected to command a fee in the region of £15 million.
