Arsenal have been dealt a massive blow in their chase for Jackson Martinez, and a striker in general, after it was revealed that the Colombian hitman will sign a contract extension at Porto. The 27 year old, according the Mirror, is set to sign a shiny new contract at Porto to end the interest of Arsenal and Chelsea.
Time is running out for Wenger to make a move for a new striker and any new players, so the Arsenal boss will be disappointed to have missed out on this potential signing. Especially as Arsenal could’ve have exploited the players £34 million release clause that is rumoured to be in his contract.
According the players agent, Luis Manuel Manso, his client will be discussing a contract renewal next week and there is already an agreement in place which should speed things along. “It is okay, I will travel to Porto next week to discuss the renewal. There is already an agreement to renew” Manso told the paper.
The Porto star is hot property in Europe for the amount of goals he’s scores. He already has 19 goals in 27 games this season, including 13 in the Primeira liga. He is well on the way to equalling the, very impressive, 26 goals in 30 league games he recorded last season.
He joined Porto in the summer of 2012 from Mexican side, Jaguares de Chiapas, for a fee of just under £8 million. Recent reports linking Martinez with a £35 million move away from Porto suggest that Porto have yet another gem from the riches of South America.
Wenger has reportedly missed out on a number of strikers this January. Dimitar Berbatov, Alvaro Morata and Mirko Vucinic have all been heavily linked with a move to the North London based club and Jackson Martinez is set to become the latest addition to that list, much to the annoyance of Arsenal fans.
