Arsenal have been given renewed hope of signing their number one summer target after he was dropped from the European Super Cup.
Sami Khedira has been top of manager Arsene Wenger’s wish-list since the signing of Alexis Sanchez from Barcelona. The move has become one of the biggest on-off moves of the summer, with Real Madrid previously claiming that the Germany international was not for sale.
Khedira, however, was forced to watch last night’s victory over Sevilla from the sidelines. Spanish newspaper Marca believe it is a sign that the La Liga giants are ready to sell. The 27-year-old was linked with a move from Madrid last summer feet falling out of favour with manager Carlo Ancelotti but wanted to stay and fight for his place. But after making only 12 league starts for Los Blancos last season he started to pine for a move away.
Wenger has been chasing a big name player to link the defence with the midfield when counter-attacking quickly and World Cup winner Khedira fits the bill. The move appeared to be dead in the water just a few days ago but after the latest snub he is believed to be desperate to get out.
Arsenal will have to compete with Chelsea for Khedira’s signature though. Despite Jose Mourinho publicly stating that The Blues were finished in the transfer market this summer he may be tempted into a reunion with the man he managed two seasons ago.
The Gunners are still in the market for a defender after the sale of Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona. But Wenger knows he needs to bolster his midfield to avoid the injury problems that derailed their title challenge last season.
